Howard Leonard Carr

KNOXVILLE - Howard Leonard Carr, 57, of Knoxville, a former Jasper County area resident and a well known area musician, died Saturday, June 15, in the Knoxville Community Hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville.

Survivors are a son, Buddy, of rural Grinnell; two daughters, Ronda (Mrs. Jeff) Monteleone and Georgia Carr, both of Newton; and four grandchildren.

Also surviving are four sisters, Millie Kline of Tracy, Evelyn Wallace of Copperas Cove, Texas, Velma Pewitz of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Marie Hartz of Knoxville, a brother, Lloyd Carr of Wichita, Kan., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Earnest, Raymond and Robert.

A Maytag Co., employee for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1974, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

He was wounded during the Korean Conflict, having served from July, 1952, until July, 1955.

He was well known for his country music, having played in Jasper County and surrounding areas with local bands, the Newtonaires and Howard Carr and his Fugatives.

The son of R. J. and Nellie Biglow Carr, he was born March 25, 1934 in Springer, N.M.

He was married to Betty Lou Poole July 27, 1957 in Corydon.

A resident of the Jasper County area for several years, he had resided more recently in Knoxville. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Tues 18 June 1991.
