Mary Jane Davis was born in Hendricks, Indiana, June 30, 1834 and departed this life at her home in Newton, Feb. 11, 1905, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 11 days. She removed with her parents from Hendricks Co., Indiana, to Monroe Co., Iowa, in the fall of 1850. In the spring of 1851 she came to Jasper County, which as since been her home. She was united in marriage to B. H. Dennis April 23, 1873, her husband dying Jan. 31, 1900.

She was again married to William Mathews, March 18, 1902 who, with her four brothers and two sisters survive her. She was a member of the Christian Church for many years and was a faithful devoted Christian, trusting in her Saviour in her last sickness. She bore her sufferings with patience and a Christian fortitude until death came as a relief.

The funeral services were held at her late home this morning at 10:30 conducted by Rev. E. F. Leake assisted by Rev. G. L. Smith. The flowers were beautiful and were fitting emblems of the love and esteem of her friends. Many of the relatives and friends could not be present on account of the storm and condition of the roads. ~ The Newton Daily News, Tuesday, February 14, 1905, Page 1, Column 5
