Mr. Brown was born in Scotland March 3rd, 1838; was united in marriage with Miss Jane Boyd October 26, 1860. Of this union there were born eleven children of whom seven survive. The wife and mother passed away March 6, 1882. The deceased has been a member of the Presbyterian church for over forty years of which about thirty-eight years were spent in the Presbyterian church at Newton.
Mr. Brown came with his family to this country in the year 1865, and proceeded directly to West Virginia, residing in that state twelve months or more. From thence they removed to Maryland and from that state, in the fall of 1868, came to Jasper county, Iowa, which has been his home ever since. He was stricken with acute bronchitis on April 25, 1907, and suffered intensely although patiently for just six weeks. Death relieved his sufferings at 10:30 o’clock p.m. last Thursday, June 6, and was gladly welcomed.
He was 69 years, 3 months and 3 days old at the time of his death.
During the last months of Mr. Brown’s illness he was kindly cared for by his children, but was especially watched and attended to by his son Robert and his granddaughter, Jean McAllister.
The children who survive him are: Mrs. D. L. Johnson of Mitchellville, Mrs. Delmer Shields of Des Moines, Mrs. Vernon French and Mrs. David McAllister, James, Robert and Mathew Brown, who reside in Newton or near this city.
The funeral was held from his late home Sunday afternoon and the interment was made at the Palo Alto cemetery southeast of town.
The songs, “Jesus Savior Pilot Me,” “Abide with Me”, “Is the Morning” were sung by a quartette, Mr. and Mrs. Will Carrier, Miss Edith Sowerwine and T. G. Bryant.
Rev. Hess, pastor of the Presbyterian church, conducted the services both at the house and the cemetery. During the brief burial service the minister was three times interrupted by loud peals of thunder.
The following resolution adopted by the members of the Presbyterian church show with what respect he was held by them.
Whereas, Our Heavenly Father in his wisdom has removed from among us our beloved brother, Wm. Brown, in whose death we have lost a true, earnest member of our church and faithful teacher in our Sunday school in humility and sincere sorrow we bow to the will of Him who doeth all things for our good.
Therefore, we, members and friends of First Presbyterian church and Sunday school, express our sorrow and extend our sympathy to the family of our departed brother.
Adopted by a rising vote of congregation Sunday, June 9, 1907.
