A Good Mother Dies
Mrs. Harry Chambers a dear good mother passed away at 5 o’clock Thursday morning September 10th at her home on Greencastle avenue. She was almost eighty-nine years old and for several years had not been very strong and her mind as well as her body had failed but she was sick only two hours. The cause of her death was paralysis of the bronchial tubes.
Mrs. Chamber’s maiden name was Ann Billan. She was born at Woodel, Yorkshire, England, October 4, 1819. In the year 1841 she was married to John D. Peters who died in 1860. To them eight children were born, five of whom are living. One son, David Peters, lives in England, Jack and Samuel Peters and Mrs. Emma Scharf reside here and Mrs. Thomas Anderson lives at Reading, Kansas.
In the year 1871 Mrs. Peters and three of the younger children came to America and joined an older son. Shortly after her arrival she became the wife of Harry Chambers. The wedding took place in Newton. She was married by Rev. H. S. Cook, the pastor of the Lutheran church at that time.
For a good many years they lived on a farm in Palo Alto township. Eight years ago they bought the little home on Greencastle avenue where her death occurred.
Mrs. Chambers was a woman who commanded the respect and love of all with whom she associated. She was gentle and kind and was very fond of children. The last few years since she has been quite a care her daughter, Mrs. Emma Scharf has shown her every attention possible and no one could have had more tender care than was given her by her husband.
By profession deceased was an Episcopalian. She loved the church of England and was a true Christian.
The funeral service was held yesterday from the home. Rev. W. Dieffenbach officiated. Hymns were sung by Mrs. George Guthrie, Miss Pearl Dieffenbach and Virgil Guthrie. Two friends of the family, Samuel Lister and W. J. Ramsey and her four grandson, Howard, Will Oscar and Carl Peters were the bearers.
