Mustered Out
Wm. S. Barbee was born in Indiana January 2, 1848. He came to Iowa with his parents when he was about twelve years old, locating in Jasper County, where he resided until death took him from our midst. When the call for troops came to suppress the rebellion, he enlisted in Company D 40th Iowa Infantry and served for three years. He was married February 13, 1868, to Sarah Raridon; nine children were born to them, and four of the five living were present when he breathed his last, Sunday morning, April 29, 1900, at 10:30. The absent one Harry, who is in the Philippines.
He was again married on the 28th of November 1895, to Caroline Winslow, who with a boy three years old survives him. Mr. Barbee was an ordained minister of The Latter Day Saints, and was loved and respected by all who knew him for his uprightness and manly character. Thus one by one the comrades are being called and the muster roll on the other side is answered by new voices every day.
Mr. Barbee has not been feeling well for some time, being troubled with a complication of diseases, but dropsy was given as the cause of his death.
The funeral services were held at the home, 422 West Washington street, Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. C. Nirk.
Among those present at the funeral were: H. W. Perry and wife, Mrs. E. W. Thurston, C. C. Barbee and wife, Harrison Barbee, Will Owens and wife, all of whom are relatives of the deceased and reside near Baxter.
The wife and mother, who thus left a widow with the care of an infant son, has the sympathy of all, but as ‘tis said: although the way is dark and dreary and the burdens fall heaviest on those the least provided to bear them, still they who put their trust in Him, will awaken to a brighter day, beyond which trouble and care never follow.
