Tice, Phyllis Joan Plate – 1930-2015

Phyllis Tice, 85, of Montezuma passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 27, 2015, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Lynnville Friends Church. Burial will be held in the Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lynnville Friends Church.
Phyllis Joan Tice, the daughter of John E. and Nellie (Boonstra) Plate, was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Rose Hill. She was a 1948 graduate of Searsboro High School where she excelled at six-on-six basketball playing both as a guard and a forward. On Aug. 23, 1949, Phyllis married her high school sweetheart Roger Tice in Rock Island, IL. To this union two children were born, Rebecca and Garold. Phyllis was a stay-at-home mom until they purchased a feed store in Lynnville in 1954, renaming it Tice Feed and Grain. Then they purchased the Montezuma Feed and grain in 1971. Phyllis was the office manager where she dealt with the daily operations of their business. Phyllis retired in 1989 when they sold Tice Feed and Grain in Lynnville. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and many different kinds of crafts. She was an avid golfer where she had two holes-in-one and was a two-time Women’s Club Champion at the Montezuma Country Club. She was a member of the Lynnville Friends Church, the Red Hat Lady Society, the Montezuma Country Club where she was very active, Lynnville Historical Society, the Lynnville Women’s Club, and a charter member of the Lynnville Retirement Homes where she served as the secretary for 41 years.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Roger Tice of Montezuma; her children, Rebecca (Greg) Northcutt of Montezuma and Garold Tice of Lynnville; six grandchildren, DeAnna Garber, Melissa (Matt) Ogan, Heather (Travis) Voshell, Chris (Deanne) Tice, Curtis Tice, and Cory (Shawna) Tice; 10 great-grandchildren with one on the way, Tyler, Hadley, Makayla, Carter, Kinsley, Brilynn, Trenton, Garrett, Halley, Jessica, and baby Voshell; four great-great-grandchildren, Jordann, Tyson, Kynsley, and Bryley; one brother, John (Vivian) Plate of Grinnell and Allene Fleming of Montezuma; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Wilma Storm, Cora Roof, and Lena Van Steenis; and a brother, Sydney Plate.
