G.A.R. Member Buried in Baxter
Dan Haley, 84, of Des Moines, Former Baxter Resident, Dies Saturday
Baxter, Oct. 18 – Special to The Daily News – Funeral services for Dan Haley, 84, of Des Moines, G.A.R. member and former resident of Baxter, were conducted here Monday afternoon from the Congregational church by Rev. Byron Northrup.
Mr. Haley committed suicide by hanging himself Saturday morning in the basement of his home in Des Moines. The act was attributed to despondency over ill health and financial worries.
A resident of this community many years ago, Mr. Haley returned to Baxter each Memorial Day for the services and was honored as the town’s only G.A.R. member. His body was accompanied to Baxter for the funeral services by a group from the Des Moines G.A.R. post.
He is survived by his third wife, of Des Moines, a son, Ray and an adopted son, Ed, both of Baxter.
Music for the funeral rites was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Thomas Helming, Mrs. Clara Lauderbaugh, Guy Hardenberg and Charley Davey.
Interment was in the Baxter cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers: Charles Burdick, Robert Geise, William Schorman, Lon Jontz, John Berry and Carl Webb. Mrs. John Boyd and Mrs. Dennis Jeffries were in charge of the flowers.
