Jesse Smith, Aged 78, Died This Morning
Jesse Smith, a Resident of This County Nearly Fifty Years, Passed Away at East Washington Street Home Early This Morning – Funeral Service Will Be Held Friday.
Following an illness of many months and for the past five weeks confined to his home, Jesse Smith, 78 years old, died at his home on East Washington street, this morning at six thirty. Mr. Smith had been a resident of Jasper county nearly half a century, having removed here from Scott county before 1870. He was a native of Pennsylvania and came to Iowa in 1865, where he located in Scott county.
Upon his arrival in this county Mr. Smith located on the farm in Buena Vista township where he remained for many years. Here he made his start in life and may well be classed as one of the state’s successful farmers. Upon retirement from active life he came to this city and took up his residence on East Washington street.
Deceased is survived by a wife and six children: J. J. Smith of California, Mrs. Anna Saunderson of Altamont, North Dakota; Edward B. of Killduff, I. S. of Killduff; C. H. of Dexter; and Mrs. Alice Hasselman of Oskaloosa.
The funeral services will be held from the late home Friday at one o’clock conducted by Rev. B. H. Gillett of West Union, and interment will be in the Kellogg cemetery.
