Obituary of Mrs. Harriett Wilks
Harriett Ible was born in Herfordshire, England, March 5, 1848 and departed this life, February 16, 1923 aged 74 years, 11 months and 11 days. She was the oldest in a family of four children and the last to die.
With her parents she came to the United States when three years of age and settled in Galesburg, Illinois, then to Pella, Iowa.
She was married to Thomas Wilks September 3, 1865 here at Monroe. Mr. Wilks died January 18, 1922.
The first twenty years of their married life was spent at Illinois, where three children were born, two of whom survive namely, Wm. and Mrs. Alice Fessler, of Monroe, also one grand, Miss Doris Fessler. One son, Albert died in Chicago, October 20, 1907.
The family came to Monroe in 1885 making this their home.
Mrs. Wilks was converted when a girl in Illinois and after coming to Monroe united with the Methodist Episcopal church and as long as strength permitted was a regular attendant at the services of the church and interested in the work of the Kingdom. For a number of years she was treasurer of the Ladies Aid Society. She was also a member of the W. R. C. and Eastern Star.
Mrs. Wilks was beloved by all who knew her because of her friendly, cheerful and kindly disposition. She loved her home and was greatly attached to her children. A great reader of the Bible from which she gathered strength for the tasks of life.
Largely attended funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church in charge of Rev. E. E. IllgenFritz.
Mrs. Mark I. Shaw, Mrs. O. M. Wilson, Sam Miles and Wm. Van Baren – Miss Ruth Cash, Pianist sang “Beautiful Isle”, “He Watches Me”, and “Jesus Lover of My Soul.”
The Eastern Star and W.R.C. attended in a body. Burial was in Monroe Cemetery.
