Herbert C. “Buck” Walker, age 73 of Prairie City, died Saturday, September 1, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at the Prairie City United Methodist Church with burial following the service at Waveland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church or to the family to be used for improvements to the park in the Prairie City square. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The son of Elsmer “Kelse” and Leo Marie (Wilson) Walker, Buck was born on June 21, 1934, in Prairie City. On July 3, 1955, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Abrahams in Winterset; she passed away in 1979. He later married Joyce Wiggins on February 1, 1997, in Prairie City. Buck was a lifelong resident of Prairie City where he was a self-employed contractor. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and IOOF Lodge in Prairie City. He was also a former member of the Prairie City Booster Club and Volunteer Fire Department. Buck’s love for mules provides many wonderful memories of trail riding and camping at Elk Rock State Park, Steve’s State Forest and Eminence Missouri with many, many friends from far and near. If you’re up for a game of 4-point pitch, Buck was always ready to take you on and according to Buck he recently had a winning streak going on with his friends in the afternoon. Wintering in Texas was a time for Buck and Joyce to spend time with their many Alamo friends who enjoyed poker night, barbeques, trips into Mexico looking for bargains, bike riding and much more. Buck was so proud of his grandchildren and spent time watching their softball, soccer, track, baseball, basketball and football games or listening to the game on the radio.
Survivors are his wife, Joyce of Prairie City, children, Tim Walker and his wife Jean of Prairie City, Randy Walker and his wife Johnna of Prairie City, Phrana Myers and her husband Dan of Prairie City and Jill Veenstra and her husband Kevin of Pella. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Scott Walker, Molly Walker, Brandon Myers, Stacy Fridley and her husband Brent, Austin Walker, Macey Walker, Taylor Veenstra and Kelse Veenstra, a great granddaughter, Jayden Lynn Fridley; a sister, Shirley Funk and her husband Ernie of Newton and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Walker of Reasnor.
Preceding Buck in death was his parents, first wife Phyllis, and a sister and brother-in-law, Coleen Keuning and her husband Al and a brother, Duane “Tuff” Walker.
