Services Held
Gijse “Grace” Sterk Vos, 86, a resident of Clearview Manor in Prairie City since January 1987, died early Tuesday, December 22, 1992, at the Manor.
Funeral services were held at the Trinity Reformed Church in Pella.
The Rev. Donald W. Plantinga, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery in Pella.
Memorials to the Clearview Manor Nursing Home or the Prairie City Ambulance Service will be accepted.
Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard and Barbara of Allen, Texas, and Larry and Susie of Wichita, Kansas; four daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Marion D. Van Haaften of Otley, Beverly and Leroy Nugteren of rural Leighton, Janice and Bob Bruxvoort of Mitchellville and Nancy and Delwin Van Zante of rural Otley; 21 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Also surviving are two brothers, Cornie Sterk of Montezuma and Pete Sterk of Harrison, Arkansas; and three sisters, Nellie (Mrs. Jay W.) Veldhuizen and Johanna Schinkel, both of Oskaloosa, and Gertrude Brower of Pella.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lewis, a son, Wilbur D., a granddaughter, a great grandson, and seven brothers, three in infancy and Ben, John, Tunis and William Sterk.
Mrs. Vos, who with her husband farmed in the Pella area until moving to Pella in 1954, had been employed in the food service department at Central College in Pella from 1954 to 1976.
She enjoyed bowling and gardening, especially flower gardening.
The daughter of Delis and Berdena Vroegh Sterk, she was born September 8, 1906, in the village of Herwignen, Province of Gelderland, The Netherlands. She moved with her family to the United States in 1912 and they settled in Pella where Mrs. Vos attended and was graduated from the Black Oak Center Country Grade School.
She was married to Lewis Abraham Vos March 23, 1926, in Prairie City.
Mrs. Vos also had resided in Prairie Village and Hilltop Manor South, both in Pella.
