Services Held
Dr. Ivan Sheeler II, 105, of Marshalltown, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, at the Iowa Veterans Home there.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Malloy Hall Leisure Resource Center of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown with the Rev. Tom Bower of the First Presbyterian Church and Chaplain Jack Mauldin officiating. Burial was at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery in Marshalltown.
Memorials in Mr. Sheeler’s name will be accepted.
The son of Daniel A. and Margaret J. (McConeghey) Sheeler, he was born December 7, 1891, in Monroe. He graduated from Newton High School in 1912, Cornell College, and the University of Iowa Medical School in 1928.
He married Mildred L. Briggs August 11, 1920 in Freeport, Illinois.
Mr. Sheeler was a veteran of the Army Medical Corps during World War I and World War II. He was employed as a county doctor in Cedar Rapids through 1935; the Chief Medical Officer for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines, retiring in 1958; and as the director of medicine at the Iowa Veterans Home through 1972. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church; the Veterans of Foreign Wars; AM Vets; 40 and 8 club; American Legion; Masonic Lodge; Des Moines Shrine; and the Des Moines Scottish Rite.
Survivors include two sons, Max of Ames, and John of Marshalltown; nine grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Max; and a sister, Jeanette Pickens.
