Services Held
Services for Marlan R. “Red” Shannon were held Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton. Pastor Danny Hodges, Associate pastor officiated the services. Burial was in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
Born January 10, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, Marlan “Red” was the son of Henry Edgar and Alta Grace Deaton Shannon. He was a 1951 graduate of Monroe High School. Marlan married JoAnn Woodrow June 26, 1954, in Newton. He worked for the Maytag Company for 36 years, retiring in 1987. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He also attended Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton.
Survivors are his wife, JoAnn of Newton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Dot Shannon of Liberty, Missouri and Gregory and Linda Shannon of Zeeland, Michigan; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Tim Gordon of Newton; and 8 grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters and a brother-in-law, Helen Colyn of Monroe, and Marlene and Bill Versteeg of Knoxville and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter Nichole Shannon in infancy, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.
