Death of Lewis Schultz
Prominent Jasper County Resident Dies At Home of Daughter-in-law, Mrs. Winnie Schultz.
Lewis F. Schultz, 85, prominent retired farmer of this vicinity died Saturday, September 8, at 10:00 o’clock at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Winnie Schultz, four miles west of Galesburg. He had been in failing health for about two years, suffering from a complication of diseases. Mr. Schultz had made his home since March with Mrs. Minne Schultz. Mr. Schultz was born in Pomerania, Prussia, April 2, 1849 and came to the United States with his parents at the age of six years. He spent his youth and early manhood on their farm near Malcom. In the fall of 1873 he moved to this community and resided there almost continually until his death. On January 1, 1874, he was united in marriage to Christie L. Rohrdanze of Reasnor and to this union six sons were born, five of whom preceded him in death. Mrs. Schultz died six years ago. He had one sister, Mrs. George Bookneau and two brothers, Carl and Henry all of whom have preceded him in his death.
Mr. Schultz was a member of the St. Andrews Lutheran church to which he was faithful as long as his health permitted. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Elk Creek lodges and the Buena Vista grange. He also was affiliated with the Daily News Three Quarter Century club of Jasper county.
Mr. Schultz was a prosperous farmer in Elk Creek township for many years retiring from active work in 1910. After the death of his wife in 1928 he made his home for a time with his son, Lewis Jr., then went to the home of his son John where he lived four years, from there going to the home of Mrs. Minne Schultz where he spent the last five months of his life.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon, September 10 at 2:00 p.m. from the Elk Creek Lutheran church by the Reverend Weber of Kellogg. The Galesburg quartet furnished the music for the service, singing two selections, “Abide With Me,” and “Asleep in Jesus”. Interment was made in the Elk Creek cemetery, with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers, Joe Lawrence, Raymond, Lewis and Melvin Schultz and Harold Rankin. Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. L. Schnell, Mrs. B. Swank, Mrs. Dow, and Miss Mabel O’Brien.
