Services for Norman James Schouten were held Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Second Reformed Church in Pella. Rev. Norman Kolenbrander officiated with Rev. Dennis Morey assisting.
Norman Schouten passed away June 29, 2003, at his residence at Oskaloosa.
Norman James Schouten was born October 20, 1934, at Waupun, Wisconsin, the son of Harvey and Geraldine Pluim Schouten.
Norm received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Central College in 1956 with a Major in Sociology. He was united in marriage to Glenys LaVelle Nederhoff August 23, 1957, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa. Norm graduated from Western Theological Seminary at Holland, Michigan, in 1959 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. In July of that year, he became the organizing pastor of the Trinity Reformed church at Brown Deer, Wisconsin. He served there until May of 1965 when he went to Our Savior’s Reformed Church in Lakewood, Colorado. In November of 1980, Norm became the senior pastor of the Second Reformed Church in Pella. He received his Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1989. He has also served as Interim Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton.
Survivors are his wife, Glenys; their four children, Brian and Leslie (Vaughn) Schouten of Omaha, Nebraska, Bruce and Carla (DeRuiter) Schouten of Pella, Tari and Jeff Eeling of Richland, Iowa, and Craig and Loretta (Van Klootwyk) Schouten of Columbia, Missouri. He also leaves three brothers and their wives, Stuart and Joan Schouten of Fond de Lac, Wisconsin; Vernon and Roxy Schouten of Brandon, Wisconsin; Merlin and Dorothy Schouten of Waupun, Wisconsin and his youngest sister, Gert Schouten of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, his parents and an infant sister.
