January 17, 1929 ~ August 18, 2016 (age 87)Richard P. “Dick” Bergeson, 87, of Newton died on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Skiff Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 24, at Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at the church. Memorials to the Community Heights Alliance Church, Campus Crusade, the Navigators, or International Messengers may be left at the church during the services or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Dick, the son of Ben and Florence (Paulson) Bergeson, was born on January 17, 1929 in Story City. He grew up in Story City and attended Story City Schools. Prior to his senior year of high school his family moved to Ames, where he graduated from high school. He served his country in the United States Army for two years. Dick then received his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University.
Dick was united in marriage with Lola M. Arneson on November 2, 1952 in Blairsburg. In 1956, Dick began working for the Maytag Company and he and Lola made their home in Newton. Dick would continue working there at a Mechanical Engineer until retiring in 1994. During that time he was also on staff at The Navigators. Dick was a charter member of the Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton where he was active as an elder, a deacon, and a Sunday School Teacher. Dick enjoyed farming, gardening, but especially being with his family. He was a loving and gracious man in everything he did and had a desire to help people grow spiritually.
Dick is survived by three children, John (Sharon) Bergeson of Runnells, Nancy Jackson of Geneseo, New York, and Karen (Andy) Albers of Grinnell; son-in-law, Merlan Rolffs of Pella; his 12 grandchildren, Jacob Bergeson, Sarah (Adam) Hartig, Lindsay (Sam) Bankes, Luke Rolffs, Jennifer Jackson, Mark Jackson, Jessica (Kyle) White, Michelle (Braden) Mosgeller, Ryan (Emily) Albers, Krysta (Grant) Robinson, Zach Albers, and Craig Albers; 10 great-grandchildren, Aiden, Anders, August, and Anaia Hartig, Devin Miller, Wallace and Oswell Bankes, Joselyn and Elowen White, and Mya Albers; his brother, Robert (DeeAnn) Bergeson of Ames; and a sister-in-law, Mickie Bergeson of Ames.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lola Bergeson in 2003; daughter, Susan “Sue” Rolffs in 2016; grandchildren, Laura Rolffs in 1988 and Matthew Rolffs in 2016; great-granddaughter, Amarie Rolffs; and a brother, Kenneth Bergeson. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 18 Aug 2016.
