Colfax United Methodist ChurchJohn A. Weirick, age 90, of Colfax, Iowa, died Wednesday August 17, 2016 in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon August 21 from 4-8 PM at the Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax, with the family present from 6-8 PM. The funeral will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday August 22 at the Colfax United Methodist Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Colfax Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Colfax United Methodist Church and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com
John was born to Dr. Harry A. Weirick and Irma Wheeler on July 6, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa. At the age of 19, John answered the call of his country and joined the United States Army Air Corps on January 4, 1945. He did his basic training at Keesler Field, Biloxi, MS., and passed Gunnery School at Las Vegas Army Air Field on August 1945 in Las Vegas, NV and later transferred to Lincoln, NE. He logged several training flights as a side gunner in the B-24 bomber. As a Private First Class he was the supply clerk, and was promoted to Corporal and served as a Supply Noncommissioned Officer in squadron supply at Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls, Texas.Upon returning to Colfax after his Honorable Discharge, he married Harriette Huntrod of Colfax, Iowa on August 22, 1947. They were married for 67 years.
As a young man, John attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines and later purchased the John Hahn Insurance Agency in Colfax which later came to be known as the Weirick Insurance Agency. He was a respected businessman in Colfax for over 40 years.
John was a life-long member of the Colfax United Methodist Church. John loved to work outside, raise vegetables, work on cars, hunt pheasant and quail, and play dominoes with friends and family. He and his wife loved to host holiday meals for the relatives.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife Harriette, and his half-brother George S. Weirick. Also preceding him were his mother-in-law Anna Huntrod, his sister-in-law Carolyn Gafford, and four brother-in-laws Lloyd Gafford, Lloyd Henderson, Gene Mallory and Lawrence Tiedje.Survivors include his son Jim (Jill) Weirick of Rochester, MN and son Steve Weirick of Urbandale, Iowa; four grandchildren Laura (Tyler) Lecy of Mound, MN; John Mark (Kati) Weirick of Greenville, SC; Lee (Alisha) Weirick of Richfield, MN; and Ryan (Hannah) Weirick of Ankeny, Iowa; and 2 great grandsons Noah Lecy and Liam Weirick. ~ The Coburn Funeral Home, Colfax, Iowa 17 Aug 2016.
