Services Held
Services for Jim Rus, 80, were held Friday, December 10, 1999, at the Second Reformed Church in Pella. Rev. Stephen Mathonnet-Vander Well, and Rev. Sophie Matthonnet-Vander Well officiated the services. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. There were Military Honors by the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella.
Jim passed away Monday, December 6, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville where he was briefly cared for following recent surgery at the V.A. Hospital in Des Moines.
The youngest of eight children, James Arie Rus, was born the son of John D. and Dora Vander Viekkert Rus, January 1, 1919. He was born east of Pella where he attended the Wheat Grow Country Grade School. As a young man, Jim worked out as a farm hand and he and his brother, Art, farmed his parents farm. Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II and served in active duty from January 28, 1943, until November 23, 1944. On July 13, 1944, Jim and Anna Mae Hoeksema were united in marriage. They made their home in Pella all of their 37 years of married life. Jim’s late father, John D. Rus, was a co-founder of Bakker and Rus Seed and Feed in Pella which he later became an owner and partner with his brother-in-law, Frank Bakker. After dissolving his partnership, Jim farmed north of Pella although he maintained his residence in Pella. Jim’s most recent residence in Pella was at Fair Haven West.
Jim was a member of the Second Reformed Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella.
Survivors are one sister, Pearl and her husband Frank Bakker and a sister-in-law, Hilda (Arthur) Rus all of Pella, along with several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
