Services Held
Services were held Saturday morning, March 13, 1982, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City for Florence Pye, 96. Graveside services were held Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Cemetery in Monroe.
Florence May Pye of Iowa City, died Wednesday afternoon, March 10, 1982, after a short illness.
Mrs. Pye was born Dec. 12, 1885, in Fort Dodge, a daughter of Fenton and Eliza Elizabeth Smith Staines. In 1911, she graduated from Grinnell College with a BA degree in education. On June 6, 1926, she married William Pye of Eldora. She taught rural schools in Humboldt and Webster counties, and Grinnell, Hampton and Eldora, serving as principal of the Eldora High School. From 1935-53 she taught at the Monroe High School. In 1967 she moved to Iowa City. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, Phi Beta Kappa in 1911, former chairwoman and secretary of the Iowa State Teachers Association, charter member of the Zeta Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, Chapter FA of the PEO in Eldora and the Monroe Order of Eastern Star. For many years she taught Sunday school in Monroe.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gordon (Elizabeth) Nielsen of Iowa City, and a grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, nine brothers and sisters.
