Life Story of Nick Poortinga
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella for Nick Poortinga of Pella, who passed away at his home October 6 at the age of 78 years, one month, and 26 days. Rev. Warren McFate, pastor of the Monroe United Methodist Church, officiated at the service. Interment was in Monroe Silent City Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Dan Hoogenakker, Andrew DeKock, Cornie Vanden Berg, Jake Van Gorp, Francis D. Poortinga and Francis G. Poortinga.
Mrs. Wayne Lubberden was the organist; Mrs. William Messamaker and Mrs. Herman Van Veen were flower attendants.
The son of Robert and Sarah Bierma Poortinga, he was born August 10, 1893. He lived most of his lifetime in Marion and Jasper Counties where he was engaged in farming before moving into Pella in 1947. He was also employed for several years as custodian of the Pella Community High School.
Survivors include a sister, Hattie Poortinga of Pella; a brother, Frank R. Poortinga of Monroe; several nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ben, Ed and Gerritt; and two sisters, Anna Poortinga who died in infancy, and Mrs. Charlie (Bertha) Dop.
