Services Held
Services of Setrith Menninga of Pella were held Friday, October 3, 1997, at the First Reformed Church in Pella. Rev. Kenneth A. Dykstra officiated the services. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Military honors were by the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella.
Setrith Menninga passed away September 30, 1997, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella of cancer.
Setrith Menninga was the first of 11 children that were born to Gysbert and Ethel Van Engelenhoven Menninga. He was born on December 3, 1922, at Otley. Setrith attended the Valley View Country Grade School and made profession of his faith at the Otley Christian Reformed Church in Otley. In March of 1945 Setrith was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent one year in occupied Japan. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant in December of 1946. On May 27, 1948, he was united in marriage with Phyllis Jean Horman at the Otley Reformed Church and to this union three children were born. They were Sharon Kay, Steven Carl, and Pamela Rae. Setrith and Jean farmed near Otley for 11 years and then moved to Pella in 1960. He then was employed at the Farmers Cooperative Exchange as the grain elevator manager. In 1977 they moved to Charles City where Setrith worked for the State of Iowa as a grain inspector. They returned to Pella in 1988 when he retired. During his retirement, Setrith worked at Central College in the maintenance department.
Setrith was a member of the First Reformed Church in Pella where he had served two terms as an Elder. He was a former Sunday School teacher at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella, and was a member of the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; their three children and their spouses: Sharon and Ivars Zagers of Des Moines, Steve and Kathy Menninga of Grinnell, Pam and Jim Vermeer of Pella; seven grandchildren; nine sisters and brothers and their spouses Kathryn (Nick, Jr.) Braafhart, Elizabeth (Gerald) Van Dusseldorp, both of Pella, Bernie and Grace Menninga of Conifer, Colorado, Clarence and Irene Menninga of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Alvin and Leanne Menninga of Platteville, Wisconsin, Gysbert and Sylvia Menninga of Oak Park, Illinois, Arlan and Joann Menninga of Matteson, Illinois, Larry and Mary Jo Menninga of Bellingham, Washington, Phyllis and Ray Klapwyk of Mt. Vernon, Washington.
Setrith was preced3ed in death by his parents; his infant sister, Arlene Ann; and two brothers-in-law.
