Services Held
Vera Leona Mathes, 95, of Baxter, died of heart failure, Monday, April 28, 1997, in Baxter.
Graveside services were held Thursday at the Newton Union Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Goad, pastor of the First Christian Church of Newton, officiating. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials to the First Christian Church or Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.
The daughter of John and Sarah (Williams) Bruce, she was born February 22, 1902, in Monroe. She was a graduate of Monroe High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
She married Herbert Henry Mathes July 11, 1927, in Knoxville.
A longtime resident of Newton and the Jasper County area she moved to Lake Havasu, Arizona, in 1984 before returning to Newton in 1986. She was employed by Montgomery Wards in Newton where she worked as a department manager for 16 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Newton and the Christian Church in Monroe.
Survivors include two special friends, Harvey and Patricia Jackson of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, a brother, and a son.
