Life Story of Mary Ann Lyons
Mary Ann Lyons was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Kane on January 31, 1870, near Monroe in Jasper County, the oldest of 11 children. She passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 22, at the nursing unit of the Winnebago Hospital.
Mary attended the local district school and was a graduate of the Monroe High School. She also attended Highland Park College in Des Moines and taught school for several years.
In October 1894, she was united in marriage to Robert A. Lyons and they went to housekeeping in their newly built home on the prairie just south of Elmore, Minn. To this union were born six children, Carleton, Inona, Ruth, Neva, Murray and Donald.
She is survived by Carleton, Inona, and Neva of Elmore, and Donald of Lancaster, Wisc.; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School classes and was active in the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society, the W.C.T.U. and the W.S.C.S. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Elmore Chapter of the Degree of Honor Society.
Mr. Lyons passed away September 23, 1923.

Mrs. Lyons is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Kane and was born January 31, 1870, on a farm in Jasper County about five miles from Monroe. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Monroe High School. She entered Highland Park College in Des Moines for several terms and became a teacher at the Capital Prairie School.
In October 1894, she married Robert Lyons and moved to Elmore, Minn. Four of her six children are still living and two of them live with her. It is reported that Mrs. Lyons is in fairly good health, good spirits and has an exceptionally sharp mind.
Mary was the oldest of a family of 10 children and is the only surviving member of the family. She was a sister of Fred, Mrs. Rosalie Le Grand, Ross, Bert, and Mrs. Bill (Pearl) Dixon.
