Funeral Thursday For Mrs. Bertha Baker

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Baker were held at the cemetery chapel at 1:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Rev. R. B. Helser, pastor of the Christian church was in charge of the service. Mrs. E. C. Smith and Miss Grace Tripp sang, “Face to face” and “Jesus Savior Pilot me.” The pall bearers were: Pearl Haifleigh, Earl Hadley, Will Johnson, Fred Tiedje, Homer Wyatt and Frank McDermott.

Bertha May, eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Bair, was born and raised on the old homestead in Sherman township, where she lived with her parents until her marriage to Charles Wilbur [sic-Wilbert] Baker February 1, 1903. The first four years of her married life were spent on the Baker farm four miles west of Newton, and from there they moved to their own home eight miles northwest of Newton. About five years ago nervous troubles developed into melancholia and she was tenderly cared for in the home, until, with hopes of a more speedy recovery, she was taken to a hospital where every medical attention was given her, but without avail. Besides her husband and three children, Lena age 14, Ora 9, and Everett 5, she leaves her parents, one brother, Leon, two sisters, Ethel and Maggie and a large circle of friends to mourn her death. One sister Blanche, preceded her to the Great Beyond. Mrs. Baker was born September 6, 1879 and departed this life Tuesday morning March 11, 1912. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton Iowa, March 14, 1919, page 5.
