Died - At his residence, nine miles north-west of Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, on the morning of the 14th inst., Clark D. Conwell, after a long and lingering illness from a malady said by the physicians to be of the nature of a cancer. It manifested itself on the face of the deceased about ten years ago, displaying in some respects the nature of a cancer, but in this distinction of the disease physicians were not agreed.
Of a 'acute nature, it by degrees assumed a chronic form, and though the family availed themselves of the best medical skill the county afforded, still the disease continued to rapidly progress, and for the last fifteen months Mr. Conwell has been coinfined to his bed, until the morning of the day above alluded to, when death came to his relief and he passed away in the midst and surrounded by the members of his grief stricken family and a few of his neighbor friends. Thus passed into the realms of the great beyond one of Jasper county's most valued citizens, and his neighbors' trusted friend; beloved by all who knew him, an exemplary and consisient christian. He had long been a member of the M.E. Church, and always sought to set before his family and tghe world the example commensurate with the life and faith of a true believer in the doctrine of true christianity.
Clark D. Conwell was born in Pennsylvania, Fayette county, in 1822, emigrating to Ohio with his parents at the age of 3 years. He there grew to the estate of manhood, becoming acquainted with and marrying Miss Rebecca Toppin in 1843. Husband and wife - they afterwards emigrated to Iowa, where he has resided for the last 33 years, rearing a family of seven children, six of whom are living, worthy examples of the noble sons and daughters of our county.
Mr. Conwell was buried with Masonic honors at the Independence cemetery, near his former home, on the forenoon of the 15th inst., the funeral discourse being held at the family residence before interment, the Rev. J. Anderson officiating.
