Richard E. Russell, 93, of Monroe, formerly of Newton died on Sunday, February 14, 2016, at Park Centre in Newton. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 18, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, February 17, at the funeral home. Memorials to the Monroe Rec Park or the American Legion Post 111 may be left at the funeral home.

Richard, the son of Samuel and Blanche (Carrier) Russell, was born on November 5, 1922 in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1941 and served his country in the United States Army from 1943-1946.

Richard was united in marriage with Norma K. Thaden on August 10, 1952 in Gladbrook. They made their home in Newton where Richard worked for DNP Lumberyard for 18 years, the Maytag Company for six years, and then for Dealer’s Warehouse for 10 years, retiring in 1985.

In 2005, Richard moved to live with his daughter, Kathy, in Monroe. Richard was a member of the American Legion Post 111 and volunteered countless hours selling tickets to the beef and pork suppers. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle everywhere around town.

Those left to honor Richard’s memory are his children, Karla Deppe of Grinnell, Gary (Joyce) Russell of Newton, and Kathy (Dan) Masterson of Monroe; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma Russell in 2005; a grandson, Whitney Russell in 2001; and two half-brothers, Francis and Theron Russell. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 14 Feb 2016.
