Mrs. Jess Dies Today

Mrs. Peter Jess, 69, who resided at 604 North Second avenue West, died at 4:00 a.m. this morning following a prolonged illness.

Funeral arrangements were being made this afternoon.

Mrs. Jess was born April 25, 1870 in Germany and came to the United States at the age of 12. The family first settle in Scott county and later moved to Jasper county. She was married to Peter Jess on July 30, 1877 [sic 1887], and to this union were born seven children.

Mr. Jess retired from farming and moved into Newton 21 years ago. Mr. Jess, who survives, is critically ill at his home.

Surviving children are John of Grinnell, Ferdinand and Harry of Newton, Mrs. John T.[Margaret] Bale of Colfax, Carl, and Mrs. Burt [Henrietta] Snook of Newton. There are also 20 grandchildren. One daughter, Olga, died in 1912. ~ The Newton Daily News, November 10, 1939. Also in Jasper County Record, November 23, 1939, page 9, column 8.
