Robert Gene Nolin was born Sept. 24, 1923, in rural Jasper County to Elvin Meek and Lena Fennema Nolin. Gene passed away Jan. 21, 2016. He attended schools in Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa. Robert Gene graduated from Monroe High School in 1941, after which he attended Iowa State College. He served in the United States Coast Guard as a Radarman 3rd Class aboard Narraguagas (AOG-32), a tanker, and on LST in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II. He participated in the campaign in Okinawa and survived two typhoons during his service.

Gene lived most of his life in Iowa where he was a farmer, ran a farm implement business, and worked for Ruan Leasing. He was active in community affairs including a member of the Methodist Church, Farm Bureau, American Legion, Preston Masonic Lodge and a 4-H leader.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marjorie McCormick Nolin; and five children, Michael Gene Nolin (Dianna), Suzanne Nolin Morecock of Monroe, Christine Nolin Ferguson (USMC Cornel Fletcher) of Columbia, Md., Margaret Jane Nolin (Earl Jensen) Santa Clara, Calif., and Joseph Stephen Nolin (USNRC Commander Sarah) Corinth, Vt. He leaves nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother John Meek Nolin; sisters, Letha Floy Modrak and Wilma Nolin Carter; and great-grandson Peter Carl Nolin.

A service for Robert Gene will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Monroe United Methodist Church, 407 N. Monroe St. Visitation with family will begin at 9 a.m. Luncheon will follow the ceremony. All are welcome to attend.
