Walt, the son of Walter B. and Ella (Everett) Kulpa, was born on October 27, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Chicago and graduated from Parker High School. Walt worked for Western Union installing communication lines for 29 years. Following a chance meeting with his future wife, Carol, at her place of employment, Walt moved to Newton, Iowa, where he and Carol were married on April 15, 1989. Walt then worked for a packing plant in Des Moines and later for the Maytag Company in Newton, retiring in 2009.

Walt had a lifelong passion for trains and enjoyed making model trains in his basement. Walt also was very talkative and enjoyed telling a good story or joke. He always did the grocery shopping because chances were good he would run into someone to talk to. Walt was a dedicated and loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother, and friend.

Those left to honor Walt’s memory are his wife, Carol Kerker-Kulpa of Newton; two daughters, Debroah Kulpa of Chicago and Cyndi (Greg) Heiden of Minooka, Illinois; three step-children, Jim (Vivian) Kerker of Granger, Iowa, Pam (Bob) McCormick of Newton, and Randy Kerker of Granger; his eight grandchildren, Tabetha McCormick, Natalie McCormick, Michael McCormick, Anthony Kerker, Eric Heiden, Emily Heiden, Stephanie Graham, and Belinda Graham; two great-grandchildren, Jayden Graham and Hunter Hiner; his sister, Christine Ciesla of Elmhurst, Illinois; and his two dogs, Mitzi and Bella.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Kulpa; brother-in-law, Bob Ciesla; and several aunts and uncles. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 11 Jan 2016.
