Janet I. Forney, 88, of Bridgeport, passed peacefully at home on Saturday, December 26, 2015, with family by her side.

Born in Newton, Iowa to Charles and Mary Alice (Miller) Boles, Janet grew up in Washington D.C. and graduated from Western High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Monmouth College in Illinois and her Master’s Degree from Iowa State University.

Janet married John Forney in July of 1953 in Washington D.C. before moving to Ithaca where John was a graduate student. While in Ithaca she was employed as a Lab technician for Dr. James Baker at what is now known as the Baker Institute for Animal Health at Cornell University. They settled in Bridgeport a couple of years later. Janet retired in 1984 from the Chittenango School District where she taught 7th grade Science for many years. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed working at On the Rise Bakery in Armory Square.

Not one to remain idle Janet was active in the community and always on the go. She was a member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Chittenango where she taught Sunday School. She was very involved with American Field Service (a student exchange program) in the 1960's and ‘70's. Some of her other activities include; an instructor for Arthritis Aquatics and for Bone Builders class, a member of the Bridgeport/Lakeport Civic Organization, and was a volunteer for many years at the Sullivan Free Library in Bridgeport.

Janet was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, Russia, and the United States with family and friends, was an avid walker, and loved to swing dance. She was also a long term subscriber to Syracuse Stage and Syracuse Symphony. Janet is predeceased by her brother Robert Miller Boles. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, John Forney; children Diane (Kevin Proctor) Forney, Jim (Nanci) Forney, and Arlyn (Ken) Shultis; grandchildren Kristen Forney Lee and Alexandra “Xani” Shultis; and loving dog Chance.
