Pothoven, Howard J. – 1944-2015

Howard James Pothoven was born to Lester and Johanna (Blom) Pothoven on July 1, 1944, in New Sharon. He passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, in Pella.
Howard attended Sully Christian Grade School, was a 1962 graduate of Lynnville-Sully High School, graduated from Central College in 1966, and earned his master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Iowa State University in 1971.
Howard met Pam Schuttinga while teaching in Prairie City, and they were married Aug. 6, 1968, in Prairie City. To this union they added three children, Traci, Kelly and Kevin. Throughout Howard’s career, he was a coach and teacher in Prairie City for five years, a high school guidance counselor and coach in Denison and Pleasantville for three years, worked at Marion County State Bank for 25 years, was elected as Marion County Supervisor for eight years, and retired in 2011. During his career, Howard also made time for farming and working with hogs and cattle.
Howard had a passion for Marion County Friends of 4-H and Youth Foundation, and served on the Marion County Pioneer Cemetery Commission. He had a love of sports and enjoyed playing basketball, softball, volleyball and golf. He was also a Rotary Club member and a Pony League coach. Howard was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Pella where he served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and assisted with building fund drives.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Pam; children, Kelly (Steve) Schwen of Chanhassen, Minn., and Kevin (Stephanie) Pothoven of Clive; grandchildren, Lauren, Lily and Luke Schwen, and Sophia and Stella Pothoven. Howard is also survived by his siblings, Bob (Jan) Pothoven of Kellogg, John (Pam) Pothoven of Oskaloosa, Lois (Simon) Ugwuoke of Raleigh, N.C., Ray (Mary) Pothoven of Pella, Virginia (Allan) Vander Hart of Ada, Mich., Murray (Kendra) Pothoven of Kellogg, and Kent (Bev) Pothoven of Sully. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marla Winegar of Altoona. Howard was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Traci Lynn; parents, Lester and Johanna; brother, Danny; nephew, Doug Vander Hart; brother-in-law, Marv Winegar, and his parents-in-law, Art and Norma Schuttinga. A memorial service was Sept. 18 at Trinity Reformed Church in Pella. Garden Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
