Larry Dale Swedlund, 56, of Newton died on Monday, December 21, 2015, at Park Centre. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 24, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends after the service with a lunch at the funeral home. Memorials to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League may be left at the funeral home.

Larry, the son of Dale R. and Mary L. (Streb) Swedlund, was born on January 6, 1959 in Boone, Iowa. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1977. He then received his B.S. in Animal Science from Iowa State University. Larry was united in marriage with Susan Moon on February 7, 1981 in Newton. They lived in Newton before moving to Nebraska for 15 years. Larry and Sue moved back to Newton in 2003, and he had worked as the Operations Manager for Strauss Locks in Urbandale. Larry enjoyed flower gardening and landscaping, woodworking, his pet fish, and collecting. He was also lovingly referred to as a loadologist, he could pack anything and everything into a small space. Larry thoroughly enjoyed the holidays and was known to put 1000 eggs in his yard at Easter for his four grandchildren and dress up as someone special during the Christmas season.

As Larry went through his cancer treatments he began what he dubbed “Larry’s Cancer Adventure”. His wife, Sue, would make fleece hats and Larry would hand them out to anyone who was good to him, including nurses, health-care people, waitresses, gas station attendants, etc. He always wanted to put a smile on people’s faces and wanted everyone around him to have a good time.

Those left to celebrate Larry’s life are his wife, Sue of Newton; children, Elizabeth Ann (Andrew) Wood of Lincoln, Nebraska and Daniel Dale (Angela) Swedlund of Creston, Iowa; four grandchildren, Jordan Phillips Swedlund, Dane Dale Walter Swedlund, Chloe Gayle Swedlund, and Oliver Andrew Wood; and his mother, Mary Swedlund of Newton. He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Swedlund in 1993 and sister, Diana Swedlund in 1987. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 21 Dec 2015.
