Early Settler Dies Monday

Mrs. Adamson Briggs Dies This Morning After Illness of But A Few Days.

Mrs. Adamson Briggs, one of the early pioneers, died at her home this morning after an illness of 10 days suffering from sceptic poisoning which resulted from an infected gall bladder.

Mrs. Briggs was cheerful and seemed to be on the road to recovery Sunday when she was suddenly taken worse and died this morning at 8:15 o’clock.

Angeline Poore, daughter of Edwin and Nancy Ann Morris Poore, was born in Indiana in 1841 and was one of nine children, and the last member of her family to die. When a small child her father died and she moved with her mother and brothers and sisters to Jasper county where she has continued to make her home.

She was one of the oldest settlers in the county and a prominent and active worker in the Civil war organizations. All of her brothers enlisted in the war of the rebellion and died in the services of the North.

Mrs. Briggs’ family settled on what is known as the Phillips farm, six miles west of Newton. She lived with her mother there until 1867 when she married to W. Adamson who died January 5, 1897. Two sons were born from this union.

In July 1914 she was married to Levi M. Briggs who survives.

Mrs. Briggs was prominent in the Methodist Episcopal church circles and was much interested in work which tended for the betterment of the city which has been her home for so many years.

She leaves besides her husband two sons, Earl Adamson, of St. Louis and Paul Adamson of Canada. The latter has been with his mother during her illness and Earl is expected here soon.
