Rita Mae Schlemmer, 93, died at Clarkson Nursing Home in Rapid City, Sept. 30, 2015.

Rita Mae Daldrup was born May 4, 1922, to Henry Daldrup and Viola (McCoy) Daldrup in Remsen. She graduated from Remsen St. Mary’s High School and attended Iowa State University and business college in Sioux City.

She was united in marriage to Robert C. Schlemmer May 14, 1943. Two children were born to their marriage, Geoffrey in 1944, and Rachelle Carol in 1953. During their marriage they lived in Chicago, Ill., Sioux Falls, S.D., Redondo Beach, Calif., and for more than 25 years in Newton, where her husband, Robert worked for the Maytag Company and Rita for the City of Newton. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Arrowhead Country Club and New Neighbors Bridge Club.

Rita enjoyed crafts, knitting, playing bridge and being a grandmother. She loved her rose gardens and while living in Newton, she won numerous awards for her roses. She was a true advocate for rescue animals. Following Robert’s retirement in 1988, they moved to Rapid City.

Rita was preceded in death by her son, Geoffrey in 1946; her husband, Robert in 2003; and step brother, Roman Daldrup in 2006.

Survivors include her daughter, Rachelle Carol (Curtis) Jensen of Rapid City; and two grandsons, Erik (Alison) Jensen of Denver, Colo., and Kyle Jensen of Minneapolis, Minn.

A public visitation was held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Kirk Funeral Home. Memorials will be directed to the National English Shepard Rescue. An online guestbook may be signed at kirkfuneralhome.com.
