Charles L. Downs, 71, of Albia, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999 at his residence. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakview Cemetery. Burial will be in Oakview Cemetery.
He was born Feb. 14, 1928 in Albia to Bart and Kathleen Downs. He married Patsy Smyzer on Oct. 10, 1951 in Chicago, Ill. He had taught in the Newton School District for 25 years before moving to California and Arizona where he designed custom jewelry. He was also the author of a published short story.
He is survived by a son, Patrick, of Minneapolis, Minn., two daughters, Deann Baxter of San Louis Obispo, Calif. and Debra Pettyjohn of Hamilton, nine grandchildren, and two brothers, Lee and Joe of California.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one son, Bart, and one brother, Ralph.
Gilbert-Nordstrom Funral Homes in Albia were in charge of arrangements.
