Baxter - Funeral services for Ethel McAninch Hanke, 79, a resident of Colonial manor in Baxter for four years and a former resident of 410 W. 16th St. N. Newton, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at the Newton Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. E. William Kaska, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. Friends may call at Reese Funeral Home in Newton after 3 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Memorials to the church may be left at the funeral home or at the church.

She died Tuesday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines following a heart attack. Survivors are a son, Paul of Altoona, a daughter, Evelyn Phelps of Newton; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Reutter of Pilot Mound.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Raymond, in 1956 and a half-sister. Mrs. Hanke was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton and Sacred Heart Society.

Mrs. Hanke, a secretary for the law offices of Caldwell and Caldwell and Campbell and Campbell, both in Newton, had worked for the Jasper County Human Services for 10 years prior to her retirement. The Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alvin McAninch, she was born June 18, 1911 in Des Moines and attended Des Moines Schools. She was married to Raymond E. Hanke in 1935 in Des Moines.
