At her home in this place, last Tuesday, occurred the death of Mrs. Eliza Shissler after an illness of nearly two years, at the age of 70 years, 9 months and 16 days. She who was Eliza Bair, was a native of Ohio, and was married September 4, 1856 to George Bennett, who subsequently volunteered in the union army and died while serving his country. The fruits of this union were four children who died in infancy.
In September, 1874, she was again united by marriage with Isaac Shissler, and proved a mother in deed as well as in name to his six children-taking the place of their dead mother and endearing herself to them in a manner that earned their love and respect to the end.
Mrs. Shissler was a member for years of The Methodist denomination, but there being no church of that society here she some time ago united with the M. E. Church of Colfax, and her late pastor, Rev. M. Stahl, was called at her request, to conduct the funeral which was from the residence last Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. In his remarks the pastor feeling and eloquently told of her useful life so beautifully ending with the close of the year-in the golden glow at the fullness of the season. He also spoke words of comfort to the devoted son, Howard, who has proven true to her precepts in the tenderness with which he has cared for her during the culmination of her sufferings. Her near surviving relatives are: Two brothers, Lafayette and Thomas Bair, of Jasper County, one sister, Mrs. Angeline Poor, of Hastings, Nebraska, and the six stepchildren. There was a large attendance of friends at the funeral and the casket was strewn with beautiful flowers. Following the exercises at the home the casket was taken to Newton where, after a short service at the cemetery, the body was laid to rest beside those of loved ones gone before. ~ Newspaper unknown, 15 Sept 1904
