Vernon K. Mitchell, 86, of Newton died on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at VA Central Healthcare System in Des Moines. Per Vernon’s wishes his body has been cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date. The Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the arrangements.

Vernon, the son of Melvin and Vivian (Long) Mitchell, was born on September 28, 1928 in Marshall County, Iowa. Vernon served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He had worked as a farmer, truck driver, and in road construction. Later in life he also drove the HIRTA bus and a school bus.

Thirty years ago, Vernon moved to Newton, which he always referred to as “God’s Country”.

In September of 2007, Vernon was united in marriage with Gretchen Poffenbarger Pothoven in New Sharon.

Vernon was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Moose Lodge. He loved his horses, dancing, and his dogs, Laddie and Peaches. Those left to honor Vernon’s memory are his wife, Gretchen Mitchell of Newton; daughter, Janet Larrew of Chicago; two grandsons, Michael (Bonnie) Larrew, Jr. and Bobby (Julia) Larrew; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Jane Peshel; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Delores (Bob) Clauson; and many friends. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 16 Jul 2015.
