Alberta Munson, 94, of Monroe, died on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at Nelson Manor in Newton. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, July 12, at the Monroe United Methodist Church in Monroe. The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials to the Monroe United Methodist Church, PCM Foundation Endowment, or Friends of Monroe Public Library may be left at the church the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Alberta, the daughter of Jan “John” and Altje “Alice” (Sneller) Kersbergen, was born on June 13, 1921 in Pella. As a school aged child, Alberta moved to Monroe. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1939. After graduation, Alberta worked as a country School Teacher. On May 6, 1944, Alberta was united in marriage with James Munson in Waco, Texas. They made their home in Monroe, where Alberta raised her family and taught school at Monroe Elementary. Later, Alberta received her teaching degree from Drake University and continued to teach until her retirement at the age of 65.

Alberta was an active member of the Monroe United Methodist Church; she was a member of the UMW and had played the organ and sang in the choir for over 50 years. She had also belonged to the Monroe Women’s Club, Today’s Club, Mother’s Club, Bridge Club, and the Eastern Star. Alberta enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, baking, cooking large meals for her family, cleaning her garage, and having coffee time with her various coffee groups.

Those left to honor Alberta’s memory are her daughter, Lana (Jon) Wilson of Monroe; son, Dennis (Lynn) Munson of St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Robby (Cindy) Wilson, Sean (Amy) Wilson, Sarah (Scott) Sgarlata, Emily (Ben) Stolz, Megan Munson, and James (Shelly) Munson; her great-grandchildren, Gavin Wilson, Morgan (Nic) Steenhoek, Lainy Wilson, Charlie Sgarlata, and Reese Sgarlata; great-great-grandchildren, Carly Steenhoek and Wilson Steenhoek; sister-in-law, Bettie Kersbergen; and her best friend and sister-in-law, Mary Munson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jan “John” and Altje “Alice” (Sneller) Kersbergen; husband, James L. Munson in 1978; and her siblings, Gerritt, John, and Neil Kersbergen and Alice Kool. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 8 Jul 2015.
