Violet Thelma Monroe, 80, of Newton died of esophageal cancer Friday at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, with burial at Newton Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Monroe was born in Knoxville and lived in the Newton area most of her life. She was a homemaker and member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Women of the Moose.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley LeMaster of Cedar Rapids and Geraldine Graham of Muncie, Ind.; two brothers, Robert Carter of Newton and Ray Carter of Fairfield; two sisters, Mildred Davis and Dorothy Ranfeld, both of Newton; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be rpresent from 3 to 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to her church. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Sun 6 July 1987.
