John Van Genderen

SULLY – John Van Genderen, 84, of Sully died Sunday, Feb. 3, at Newton Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church in Sully.

The Rev. K. Daniel Hakken, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Sully Cemetery.

Family visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Sully Garden Chapel Funeral Home.

Memorials to Parkinson’s Research may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are four daughters, Genevieve (Mrs. Wilson) Dop of Reasnor, Norma (Mrs. Harris) Van Waardhuizen of Pleasantville, Lois (Mrs. Carroll) Van Gorp of Reasnor and Lila (Mrs. James) De Kruyff of Otley; two sons, Russell and Ronald, both of Monroe; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four sisters, Kate Kleinpaste of Albert Lea, Minn., Minnie Brand of Sully, Nelle Kooistra of Lynnville and Jeanette De Ruiter of Lynnville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Bertha, May 7, 1988, three brothers, Gerrit, Leonard and Peter and seven sisters, Gertie Van Der Kamp, Maggie Leydens, Henrietta Poynor and Lena Bossari and thee in infancy.

Mr. Van Genderen was a member of the Sully First Reformed Church and served as an elder on the church consistory. He also served on the board of directors of Otley-Monroe Co-Op and the Reasnor Telephone Co.

The son of William and Anna De Hoog Van Genderen, he was born Oct. 13, 1906 near Taintor and grew up in the New Sharon and Sully communities.

He was married to Elizabeth Jansen Jan. 9, 1930 in Sully and they farmed in the Sully and Monroe areas until retiring in 1971 and moving to Sully.

Mr. Van Genderen had been a resident of the Newton Health Care Center since 1985. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Tues 5 Feb 1991.
