Marriages and Deaths

DIED – At his home in this place, on Sunday, September 3, 1893, JOSEPH Mc VEY KENNEDY, aged 55 years, 2 months and 16 days.

The funeral was from the residence yesterday, being conducted by Rev. W. E. Knight, pastor of the Presbyterian Church here, and the interment was at oak Hill, in conformity with the ceremonies of the Masonic Order, of which deceased was a member. Members of the Masonic Lodge at Mitchellville and Newton and a detachment of thirty members of Oriental Commandery No. 29 K.T., of Newton, acted as escort to the cemetery. The K. of P. band of Newton headed this detachment, and the procession of carriages completed the mournful cortege, which was led by the Masonic Lodges of this place and Mitchellville.

Joseph Mc Vey Kennedy was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, June 17, 1838, of Scotch-Irish parentage – the sixth of a family of five sons and two daughters – and his boyhood was passed on the old farm homestead, where he acquired a common school education, and after an honorable course in Washington College, from which he was graduated with honor, he engaged in the profession of school teaching until the breaking out of the civil war, when he enlisted in Company K, First Pennsylvania Cavalry, with which he served faithfully to the end of the war, participating with his company in the struggle at Gettysburg and all the principal battles in which his regiment was engaged.

At the conclusion of the war, after a brief visit at his old home, he came west and located in Colfax – this was in 1867 – and embarked in business, and up to six months ago, when his health began to give way, he was a prominent and leading spirit in every enterprise for the advancement and building up of his town.

He was prominent among the founders of the Presbyterian church here and was always closely identified with the interests of the public school. His marriage in 1877 to Miss Anna Troth, a teacher in the public school at this place, was followed by a happy married life of two brief years, which terminated in the death of Mrs. K.

In 1886 he was united to Miss Belle Baker, of this place, who survives him. Their union has been the blending of two lives tried by the fires of sorrow, and inspired with lofty ambition to share their subdued happiness with all who came within their circle. Active in all good work of their church and society, they seemed devoted to the labor of love, and their success in this task will long be remembered by those who have been aided and encouraged – who cherish their many deeds of charity and consolation.

In business Mr. Kennedy’s methods were fair and honorable, and were crowned with the success dues an honorable man. In disposition he was modest and unassuming, but all who came in contact with hi acknowledged his worth.

In his death the church and community lose a member and worker they cannot soon replace. While we sorrow beside his new-made gave, we delight to know that he is now beyond the reach of all pain and suffering. His work well done, he rests well. ~ The Colfax Clipper, Colfax Iowa Fri 8 Sept 1893.
