Dennis Robert Yohe went to be with the Lord on Feb. 24, 2013, at the age of 65. He was born in McGregor on April 2, 1947, to Donald and Mary (Adams) Yohe. He is survived by his parents; siblings, Ralph, Bernie, Aletha, Dean and Roger; his girls, Jana (Darby) and Crista (Zach); along with three grandchildren; a special young man he called his A+ son, Burton (wife Hilary and two boys); and also his godson, Julio.
Dennis graduated from Ackley-Geneva High School and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree at The University of Northern Iowa. He was a proud Army veteran and served in Vietnam. He had various careers throughout his life that always included interacting with others; teacher, horse trainer, salesman, manager, golf instructor and process server. Dennis enjoyed helping families in his neighborhood and would help them with anything from obtaining healthcare, food, clothing, tutoring, or transportation. He loved all animals. He raised and trained Morgan horses and was former president for the Morgan Horse Club of Iowa. He also raised and trained dogs. He was an avid golfer. He was an outdoors man who enjoyed hunting pheasants and quail and fishing with his grandchildren. Dennis enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He was proud to talk about the achievements and hobbies of his children, grandchildren and other special loved ones.
Dennis’ children remember him as a dad that made sure each of them knew how special and loved they were. As kids he took them to church every Sunday and made sure they knew how important they were to this world, but most of all to him and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. From childhood to adulthood he gave them moral support and great advice. He had a special way of helping his children through difficult situations with a calm and comforting approach. He had a fun and creative approach to parents. He taught them how to ride a horse, swing a golf club the correct way, and brought out the best of each of their talents. He could always make his children laugh by telling a story, blowing his horn into his hanky, roller skating backwards, showing off his artistic abilities by drawing anything they wished, or having a singing contest while taking a trip to a horse farm. His grandchildren enjoyed his guidance and encouragement with each of their hobbies; sports, horses, music, academics, hunting and fishing.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A service for Dennis will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Iowa Veteran Cemetery near Van Meter. Following the service, friends are welcome to join the family for remembrance of Dennis and a plaque dedication from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at A. H. Blank golf Course in Des Moines.
