Obituary for Alta Marie DeRaad
Alta Marie Beyer was born on March 17, 1922, on the family farm near Monroe, Iowa. She was the sixth of seven children that were born to Arie and Marie Van Zee Beyer. Alta Marie aspired to continue her education and moved to Pella, Iowa to live with a relative while attending high school at Pella Public High School. She then obtained her teacher’s certificate and did substitute teaching at Prairie City, Iowa.

On June 10, 1942, she was united in marriage with Arthur Leroy DeRaad at Monroe and to this union four children were born: Eugene Wayne, Verlan Dean, Lorraine Kay and Bruce Beyer. Alta Marie and Art first lived on his parents, Jess and Marie DeRaad’s, homeplace in the Fifield area until moving to a farm near Otley, Iowa. In 1955, they moved to Prairie City where they continued farming and operated a family trucking company. Alta also was the book keeper for Walter’s Furniture in Prairie City for several years.

Alta was a very multi talented lady. She served as the church organist at the Prairie City Christian Reformed Church for church services, and played at weddings and funeral for over 50 years. She had been a member of the Gospelettes at the Prairie City Christian Reformed Church for many years and played for and directed 4 Nights For God in Prairie City for several years. Alta loved to quilt and sew. She made quilts for everyone of her children and grandchildren.

Following the death of her husband, Art, on April 26, 1992, Alta Marie moved to Pella, Iowa and became a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church. On Sunday morning, June 28, 2015, she passed away peacefully at her residence in Vriendschap Village at the age of 93 years. Alta is survived by her four children and their spouses, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. They and their families are:

Of her original family Alta Marie leaves her younger brother, Bob Beyer, and his wife, Elma, of Pella; her sister-in-law, Bertha (Gerrit) Beyer of Oskaloosa, Iowa; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Leona (DeRaad) and Carl Horman of Pella.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; her parents, Arie and Marie Beyer; her parents-in-law, Jess and Marie DeRaad; and the following sisters and brothers and their spouses: Elizabeth and Herman Tuinstra, Bertha and William Van Zee, Evelyn and William Rouw, Henry and Henrietta Beyer and Gerrit Beyer.

Alta Marie will be remembered as a loving and caring mother and grandmother.

Funeral services will be held
Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 10:30 a.m.
Calvary Christian Reformed Church, Pella, Iowa
Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery at Pella, Iowa

Visitation will begin Wednesday afternoon at Van Dyk- Duven Funeral Home where the family will be present Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
