Marie Carnahan

GRINNELL - Marie Swartzendruber Carnahan, 86, of Friendship Manor, a former resident of Newton, died Sunday evening, Feb. 17, at the Grinnell General Hospital of a heart ailment.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Newton First United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after noon Tuesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society will be accepted.

Survivors are four sons, Frank of Hudson, Dwight of Camdenton, Mo., Paul of Gilman and Charles of Grinnell; five daughters, Donna (Mrs. Clifford) Farland and Marlene (Mrs. Dwane) Altemeier, both of Newton, Jackie (Mrs. George) Graham of Gilman, Nina (Mrs. Wayne) Farland of Cedar Rapids and Doris (Mrs. Dick) Vander Werff of Sully; 35 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Bette (Mrs. Merrill) Engle of Newton, Mayme (Mrs. Lloyd) Robertson of Washington and Lydia (Mrs. Don) Canfield of Mountain Home, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse, in 1973, parents, two sons, Joseph Edwards and Boyd Carnahan; a brother, two sisters, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Carnahan, a homemaker, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Federated Club of Newburg, was a member of Newburg Church of Christ for 20 years and a member of the church's Women’s Fellowship.

The daughter of Joseph M. and Barbara A. Liechty Swartzendruber, she was born Oct. 24, 1904 near Lake Charles, La., and attended schools in the Wellman-Kalona area.

She was married to Jesse E. Carnahan May 14, 1949 in Newburg.

Mrs. Carnahan moved to Newburg in 1949 from Newton and in 1976 returned to Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Mon 18 Feb 1991.
