MARSHALLTOWN — Doyle I. Morris, age 84, of Marshalltown, formerly of Baxter, passed away Sunday June, 29, 2014 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 2, at the Main Street Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes, 405 W. Main St., Marshalltown. Following the service, interment will take place at Restland Cemetery in Baxter. A reception will be held following the graveside service at the Baxter Community Building. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Anderson Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Baxter American Legion. Condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com.

Doyle was born Jan. 22, 1930 in Oskaloosa to Robert Martin and Leona Fay (Bradley) Morris. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School. Doyle was united in marriage to Minnie M. Preston on Sept. 17, 1976. The couple made their home in Baxter. Doyle was employed at Pella Rolscreen, retiring in 1986. Doyle was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army for two and a half years. He served with Company E of the Quad Lightning Division in the Cactus Regiment serving in Samsung, North Korea. Honors received from the Army include: combat, oversees, infantry and sharp shooter — rifle and pistol.

Doyle was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter. He was a member of the Baxter American Legion, serving under various posts, Izaak Walton League, American Hunter Association, NRA and served as a Hunter Education instructor. Doyle spent a lot of time volunteering at the Baxter Elementary School, where the kids nicknamed him “Mr. Wonderful.” He also enjoyed volunteering at the Baxter Care Center, calling bingo for the residents. Doyle loved spending time with his family, some hobbies of his were: writing poetry, doing latch hook and dancing around and joking with his grandchildren.

Doyle will be missed by his daughters, Claudia (Paul) Smith, of Des Moines, and Kathy Morris, a son, David (Teresa) Morris and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie and a granddaughter, Victoria Kirsten Smith. ~ The Oskaloosa Herald 3 Jul 2014.
