Services Held for Mrs. Paul Monroe

Funeral services for Mrs. Paul (Marie) Monroe, 88, a partner in the Monroe Table Co., at Colfax, were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at the Presbyterian Church in Colfax.

The Rev. Kurt Freund, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in the Colfax Cemetery.

Organist was Miss Eleanor Howell; soloist was Miss Ann Ersham.

Casket bearers were Ted Gableman, Darrold Hunter, Cleo Hardenbrook, Robert Underwood, Jr., Steve Underwood and Joe Slatkoski.

Honorary bearers were Robert Underwood, Howard Bell, George Weirick and George Paynter.

Marie Hill, daughter of William R. and Phoebe Barnett hill, was born at Earlham, Iowa on Sept. 30, 1891, and died at Clearview Manor in Prairie City on Feb. 19, 1980 at the age of 88 years. She was educated at the Earlham Academy and Highland Park College. An accomplished violinist, she travelled for a time on the Chautauqua Circuit with an all girl orchestra.

On June 14, 1911 she was united in marriage to Paul Monroe. In 1913 she and her husband came to Colfax to join his father in the operation of the Close-To-Nature company and she continued to work in the office for many years after it became the Monroe Co., of which she was a partner.

She was a member of the Friends Church, but in Colfax gave of her time and talent to the Presbyterian Church. She was a 62 year member of P.E.O., and for many years a member of the Poinsettia Club. For 34 years she was the Treasurer of the Library Board, and was always interested in projects for the benefit of the town.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Barbara Monroe of Colfax, five grandchildren, Stephen of Ames, Martha Monroe Hancock of Ridgefield, Wash., Sheila of Vineland, N.J., Kirby of Pella and Mark of Des Moines. She also had four great-grandchildren and one nephew, Dr. David Hamm of Portland, Ore.

Preceding her in death were her husband, a son, James, her parents and a sister. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa
