Life-long Newton resident Darlene Francis Guthrie Brosig died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at home. She was 91. Darlene was born in Newton on July 22, 1923, the oldest daughter of Hazel (Dolph) and Frank Andrew Guthrie. Darlene was a 1941 graduate of Newton Senior High School and she attended Iowa State University in Ames, where she met her future husband, Hans J. Brosig. She was married to Hans on Oct. 13, 1946. Hans preceded her in death in 2001.

Hans and Darlene worked together in the family business, Guthrie Seed and Feed, until their retirement. They then went to work for the Jasper County Historical Society Museum in Newton, which had long been a passion of theirs. Hans served as the director of the museum and Darlene worked as office administrator. During their 10 years with the museum, they secured several federal and state historic grants for the facility, which helped promote growth at the museum and fund several major exhibits. They retired from the museum in 2001.

Darlene was a member of First United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, Hans, Darlene was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her sister, Myrna, and two children: Lisa D. Brosig of Chicago, Illinois., and Andrew D. Brosig of Nacogdoches, Texas.

Memorial donations in Darlene's name may be made to First United Methodist Church of Newton or the Jasper County Historical Society Museum. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa 24 Aug 2014.
