Monroe - Ernest Arden Simpson, 80, of Monroe, died Monday at Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Monroe Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Elder William McDonald officiating. Burial will be at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe is handling arrangements

Friends may call today at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to the Monroe Fire Department and Emergency Unit

The son of Horace Orly and Sadie Mae Koons Simpson, he was born Dec. 22, 1920 in Rib Lake, Wis. At the age of 14 he moved to Iowa. He married Mae Agnes Slocum Aug 17, 1942, in Unionville, Mo.

A resident of Monroe for many years, he was an elder of the Regorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as pastor of the Monroe congregation for 13 years. He was a member of the Red Rock Township Club for many years, a board member of Monroe Senior Housing, a former member of Marion County Extension Council and the Monroe City County.

Mr. Simpson worked as a coal miner, a farmer and retired from Van Ryswyk Plumbing and Heating in Monroe.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters in-law, William and Patti of Monroe, and Rodney and Bev of Ames; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Ron Beaver of Knoxville; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clifford of Des Moines and Melvin of Monroe, and a sister, Beryl Kinart of Monroe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, a sister and a granddaughter.
