The son of LeRoy and Bessie Thompson Foster, Sonny was born on September 5, 1925 at Eckton, Minnesota. The family moved to the Grinnell area, and he attended schools at Newburg and Grinnell. During World War II he served with the United States Navy, and following the war he returned to Grinnell and worked on highway construction.

On July 3, 1950, he was married to Maggie Stepp at Montezuma, Iowa. The couple made their home in Kellogg, where he was employed for the Midwest Metal Stamping Company. Sonny also worked for 37 years as a machinist for the Maytag Company in Newton, retiring in 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Maggie; two daughters, Cynthia Brown of Rock Springs, Wyoming and Mollie Sumner of Kellogg; three step daughters, Faye Hutchinson of Marshalltown, Sue Streeter of Ames, and Judi Doane of Flagstaff, AZ; five grandchildren; ten step grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and his sister, Nancy Foster of Rosemeade, California.

Sonny died on Sunday, April 28, 1991 at his home. He was 65 years of age, and was preceded in death by his parents; and five sisters, Hazel Foster, Anna Marie McCormack, Barbara Innis, Marian Johnson, and Frances Foster.
